Handmade soaps do not dry your skin compared to commercial soaps. The large companies remove the glycerin from their products while handmade soaps still contain all their natural glycerin. Glycerin is what moisturizes your skin. Commercial soaps are detergents, a cheaply made product which proves another reason to use handmade soaps!
Benefits of glycerin
Handmade soaps use vegetable glycerin which is created from vegetables. Glycerin is a natural skin softener by attracting water from surrounding air to keep the skin moisturized and hydrated. The vegetable oils that we use contain between 7-13% glycerin.
Commercial soaps use animal glycerin which they get from animal fat which was turned into oil. They then remove the glycerin from the oils and adds the removed glycerin into additional products like cream and lotions. Now the consumer has to buy 2 products to achieve moisturized skin which places more money in the commercial companies’ “pockets”. Since none of the glycerin has been removed Handmade soaps contain all the glycerin. Soaps without glycerin are often much harder than handmade soaps.
Is Lye safe?
Handmade soaps are made with lye and this worries many people as they don’t want to put lye on their skin. We understand, so let us explain a little further… You can’t make soap without lye. When a bar of handmade soap is completely cured, there is no lye left. The process called saponification turns lye and oils into soap. If the soap is made properly, the lye is used up during the saponification process.
The skin
The skin is the biggest human organ and contains over 11 miles of blood vessels and 45 miles of nerve cells. The skin protects against germs, insulates us from temperature changes, and prevents water loss from our bodies. It is our first line of defense.
Commercial soaps contain detergents while handmade soaps contain natural products. Why do you want to put detergents on your largest human organ? The skin absorbs everything you put on it. Treat your skin better and your skin will look better and younger!
Why does handmade soaps cost more?
Handmade soaps can’t be mass produced. For that reason, they can be customized with size, shape, colors, scents, oils and butters. This is not possible with commercial soaps which are produced in large quantities with cheap detergents. Detergents can be harsh on the skin, making your skin feel dry and irritated. Each handmade soap cures for 4-6 weeks and are made in small batches while a commercial soap is mass produced and packaged the same day.
Handmade soaps are priced higher because they use high quality natural ingredients and oils, fragrances and colors that are approved for the skin. We don’t use any animal by-products only all-natural ingredients. The only thing we use from an animal is goats’ milk. No animals were hurt while making these products. Our soap is made in America while many commercial soaps are made in Asia and shipped to America.
How to help the soap last longer
If it seems like handmade soaps have a shorter “life” than commercial soaps, the reason is because handmade soaps contain glycerin which makes the soap “melt” faster. To extend the life of your soap, store all handmade soaps in a well-draining soap dish out of the shower stream. Doing so will help maximize the life of the soap. It also helps to cut the handmade soap in half before first use.
A smaller soap is easier to hold in your hand especially for little hands like children’s. Another fun fact for children would be to have a “new” soap with a “new” scent more often when the soap bar is cut into smaller bars. It could be another great idea to make a bath more fun for the children.

For people with sensitive skin you may wonder if handmade soaps will work for you? Yes, they will as handmade soaps are free of detergent and other harmful chemicals. Our soaps are made from 100% natural oils. We also make unscented soaps for those that may be allergic to fragrances and scents.
What is the white powder on the soap?
Occasionally you will see white power on top of the handmade soaps. This is called Soda ash and its harmless. It can form within the first 24 hours of the loaf of soap being cut into bars. And it will rinse off after the first use.
